Promoting Resilient Green Growth in Dairy Sub-Sector through Ensuring RECP under “Sustainable Microenterprise and Resilient Transformation (SMART) Project”

Duration: 17 November 2024 – 30 June 2028

Objectives: The main objective of the sub-project is to increase income and employment through promoting environment-friendly business among the micro-enterprises. The specific objectives of the sub-project are:

  • Increase awareness among the entrepreneurs on climate change, natural disaster and environmental risk factors.
  • Promoting RECP among MEs to enhance resource efficiency, reduce risk of climate change and increase adaptation of environment friendly sustainable practices.
  • Assist MEs of the cluster for sustainable and green growth through capacity building for producing diversified and safe dairy products, technology and value chain development.
  • Enhance capacity and technical skills of the MEs and enhance services of non-revenue and revenue generating common services for promoting green value chain and expand markets of green products.
  • Ensure effective management of the MEs through providing suitable -loan support and digitalization of financial management to 1,500 MEs.

Major activities: Under Component 1: Enabling Capacity and Systems for green growth of MEs

(a) Enhancing MEs environmental knowledge capacity – Training on Climate vulnerability and climate resilient RECP, Good farming practice, capacity development of RECP, product diversification, Established Environmental Club.

(b) Demonstration of climate-resilient RECP and Technical capacity & Skills development to adopt RECP – Resource efficient Model dairy processors, Model cow rearing farm, Assistance for RECP adoption, OHS, Support for common service establishment.

(c) Digitalization of Environmental and financial Management System Digitalization of Environmental and financial Management System, Technology transfer.

(d) Non-revenue-generating common service facilities – Milk collection center and WASH facility development, Product Certification training (BSTI), Fair arrangement, Dairy product branding & promotion.
(e) Capacity development of NDP – Enhancing organizational capability for effective project implementation and monitoring.

 

Under Component 2: Providing Access to Finance for MEs to enable Green Growth

(a) Providing financial support to MEs for long-term sustainability, including digital loan processing, cashless disbursements, and upgrading financial systems.

(b) Revenue-generating common service facilities – such as establishing milk chilling centers, biogas plants, large-scale production of bio-pesticides and compost (vermi composting and pit composting), demonstration of modern dairy machinery, and development of milk and dairy product.

Implementation process: The sub-project consists of two components: (a) Enhancing services and enabling systems, and (b) Strengthening access to finance for commercially viable, environmentally friendly, and resilient microenterprises. The project activities are implemented jointly by the project staff and the microfinance staff of NDP. The beneficiaries of the project are NDP’s microfinance borrowers who operate dairy enterprises within the project’s cluster area.

Matching of SDG: Particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
